Quiltbeurs

Ulver tonight, excitement!

It's been a long time since I've been this excited for a concert!!!
It's dangerous, because it's easier to be disappointed when your expectations are high.
You never know how metal-crowds behave; I just really hope everybody will keep their mouths shut during the concert so that it'll be more close to a classical concert experience. The concert is seated so I guess Ulver are opting for that approach.

I got up at 6:15 this morning to arrive as early as possible at work. I'm going to leave work at 4:30 pm, and hopefully will be home before 6. Christiaan will pick me up with his car, and we'll drive to Tilburg. Going to meet with a couple of friends, some of which I haven't seen for too long (Misha, looking forward to seeing you !).

I hope they are going to play this song!

The last time I saw OM live was during Roadburn 2007. They were playing on the main stage of 013, Tilburg. It was kind of weird to see them playing on such a huge stage, where even the Red Sparowes (8 guys) had enough space to move around comfortably. I thought the 2 guys did an awesome job though. They produced enough sound to make your chest-bone drone along with their music.

It is clear though, that OM is much more enjoyable in a small venue like Tivoli de Helling. Christiaan and I arrived at 8:15 pm and were just in time for the first artist of the evening: Lichens. The crowd was awesome, some people made me feel like I was back in the 70ies. Hippies aren’t dead! I also saw some regular metal folks, guys in their 40ies, punks and the ‘rest’ (I consider myself to belong in the ‘rest’ category).

I had no idea who Lichens were, but it turned out to be one guy only. If I have to make an educated guess as to where he came from I’d say India [research on Last.fm, he is from US]. He had cool hair, standing straight up. He looked like he had taken some kind of drugs, or a lot of drugs at the same time. He didn’t say a word, just mimicked that he wanted the lights turned as low as possible, then he nodded and began his show. He had a guitar, a mic and some equipment to loop sounds. He began by playing a super relaxed tune on his guitar, but the sound was very aerie, mysterious; not your usual metal-guitar-sound. He started to loop the sounds, a loop being about 10 seconds. After he had made a sort of wall of sounds (it still made harmonic sense, but that was about to change), he fetched the mic and ‘sang’, or rather hummed some looping melodies. All the while you could see the guy was totally into it, in trance. The whole thing reminded me of one project we had when I was still attending the conservatory in Rotterdam. We played music from Bali on the gamelan, and it was also in this pattern. The circle, the loop, went on and on, everybody had his role and you felt in a trance while playing your gamelan. It was an awesome experience, so I could really understand how the guy felt. After about 20 minutes the music started to change in character. It became more and more a-tonal, drone, noise. Uncountable layers of loops were over each other by now and the guy was going crazy with his mic. I felt a little uncomfortable, was this still music? Suddenly, it was over. He got up and left. And the audience was left in confusion. This was the one and only time that I was in a metal crowd and everybody was silent during a show! The whole song took 30 minutes total, but it felt like a moment. It was awesome!

Some other friends also arrived, we chatted over a drink while the stage was fixed for OM to enter. After 2007 I have never checked up on their new stuff, so I was curious. They entered the stage, and at the first note I knew it would be well. OM consists of a drummer and a bass-player only, the latter is also the singer. They produce something you can call a crossover of doom, stoner, drone, psychedelic. It is hard to explain, see the movie below!

Live capture:

They played 4 songs total. That sounds weird, but each song is at least 10 minutes long, if not longer. The last song I finally recognized: Pilgrimage. It is such an awesome song. It reminds me a lot of the early Pink Floyd albums somehow. These guys are totally relaxed. They took their time between songs, chatted some with the audience. Lichen was supporting them and it was really fun to watch that guy. He was playing the tambourine, and he also did this with 100% concentration and conviction. Awesome to see. I enjoyed myself immensely during the show and was really glad I went.

After the show Blackout would start, a drum’n bass party. I would love to have stayed, but my alarm was set to go off at 7:30 am the next morning so I decided to take leave. It was a great evening and Lichen was certainly the hero of the evening.

The Simple Life

Human lives are always so complicated. Everyone is busy doing their oh-so-important job/task on this planet. Sometimes it drives me to think that if you are not participating in this ratrace you are not really ‘human’. You need to keep yourself busy, lazy people are frowned upon. Well, I really LOVE being lazy sometimes and at those moments I envy cats. The life of a cat is so simple. It consists of eating, sleeping, some playtime, cuddling and then more sleeping. I have such a weak spot for cats, their fluffy appearance makes me want to hug and stroke them all the time.

My parents’ cat however, misleads me all the time. She looks super cute, but it is really a devil in disguise. If you stroke her, she will bite you really hard. Yet, every time I see her I have the urge to stroke her, and she has bitten me quite a few times. My parents spoil her enormously, especially my dad.

A day in the life of Tibby.

Licking away the evidence

The reason I’m writing this is just that most of the day I’m amazed by what people do for a living; how they are chasing from place A to place B without wondering what it’s all for. Does it make them happy? Or are they doing it because they have to? How many people would quit their jobs if they received money for free? As you can see, I’m clearly not happy participating in the ‘ratrace’, and I’m really searching for the answer on the question ‘what would fit me?’ What kind of job? Where do I want to go in life? It frustrates me that there are no clearcut answers to these questions, you have to live life in order to find it out. My stupid brain never stops crunching, and thoughts flow on and on. Quite annoying sometimes!

Christelijke BLING

Forget it!

A decade has passed!

Better late than never, here are some trivia about the last decade.

Best album of 2009:
Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs

I can't even begin to explain the awesomeness of the post black-metal post-whatever genre release. I'm usually not really into French stuff. Heck, I didn't even know they could produce decent metal of any kind. Yet, this release has blown me of my socks straight into music heaven. They make black metal fun again, especially more so because this isn't even a black metal release strictly seen. Tr00 black metal fans won't agree with me AT ALL here, but this is how that sort of music should be. It's all about the atmosphere, weaving all different kinds of genres into one sonic experience. That is what this is, and in French too!

By all means, check this out!!

My favorite album of the decade:
Agalloch - The Mantle

This is not a surprise for the people who know me, I've been an Agalloch fan ever since my now ex-boyfriend introduced me to them. The first song I heard was In 'The Shadow of Our Pale Companion' and I fell in love with the music instantly. All their albums are awesome, but my personal favorite remains The Mantle. The album is an organic whole, combining instrumental songs with epics such as the song I named before. Again, it's about the atmosphere on this one. There are times I cannot listen to this album, because it makes me feel too melancholic. That doesn't diminish the awesomenessfactor of it though ;)

Favorite classical music of the decade:
Arvo Pärt - Fratres

The Cantus In Memoriam of Benjamin Britten on the album Fratres is probably still the most intense piece of music I ever heard. I barely listen to it, because every time I do so it totally…..I don't even know how to describe what happens. Goosebumps, tears, shivers across my body, it's insane! It's the saddest music I've ever heard, and so intense it's almost unhealthy! I really hope to see this one live, although I'm quite scared what will happen to me then.

The rest of this album is full of personal meaning to me, as I explored this album with (again) a now ex-boyfriend. Call me a fool, but music retains a lot of meaning to me if it is explored with people I care about. It gives more meaning to it, even if it is years ago.

Best metal concert of the decade:
The Agalloch concert of 2009 was great! It ended with a long meditation like noise-moment, with me and Nick holding hands with John, the singer of the band. Cool experience, that I will never forget!
Other candidates were: Wolves In The Throne room concert earlier 2009. It was so fucking loud and it was the first and only time that black metal moved me to tears. It took possession of my whole body, that was awesome!
I was very much moved to tears during the performance of Brahms' Pianoconcert in the Concertgebouw. It was the first time I saw them, and at the first stroke from the violins tears streamed down my cheeks. The best moment was the first chord of the piano. This remains one of my favorite Brahms' compositions!

Craziest thing I did during the decade:
Going to Canada on my own when I was 19. I've done more things, foolish or not, but this was without a doubt the most exciting experience! I fell in love with the country and certainly want to go back one day and see more of the nature there.

Other good things about the last decade:
Technological development. I remember that a friend of mine was the first in my direct environment with a mobile phone. Omgosh, what an excitement. We spent hours trying all the sounds on the thing, and NOT calling with it, because it was expensive as hell. I still have my first mobile phone, an azure blue Sony Ericson. It was a good machine, it got soaked in rain once and it still worked after laying on my radiator for two days.
I also remember that we got internet at home, a whopping 5 kb a second! Secretly, I downloaded classical music when my parents weren't home. I was already a pirate back then! Then we got adsl, and it didn't matter anymore how long you were online.
The internet has opened up a whole world, I met people from all over the country because of forums. I went to Canada to meet someone, and someone from the US came to NL to meet me. Amazing stuff! The last few years it has gone even further. I bought an iPhone and now I'm always able to go online. Twitter, Facebook, my friends are always with me. It's a fun thing, but it also has downsides. I sometimes feel the 'urge' to check Facebook, Twitter and that impulse is quite annoying. When I go away for a vacation I am without a computer and phone and I feel fine, sometimes a little relieved to be away from it all! I always try to keep that up at home, but it fails. The computer is always at our hands and these days you are expected to be reachable day and night. I don't really have a solution yet on how to handle this.

Resolutions for the new year:
Resolution should be fun, or else you are never going to live up to them. I have made a fun one and it is to immerse myself in more culture. I'm quite at home in music, but what about art? I recently started experimenting with photography, but I'm still a novice. I'm going to buy a Museum Yearcard. For 35 euro's, I can go into most Dutch museums for free for the next year. I still have my free Public Transit card for the next 6 months, so I should utilize that to the fullest.

Happy new year all, and make the best of it!
